Special Considerations

Travelers are advised to fill their gas tanks in Carmel before heading south or in San Simeon before heading north on Route 1. There are few gas stations along the way.

The road is narrow and curvy, and in some places it has narrow shoulders and sharp drop offs to the ocean far below. Drive with care and watch for pedestrians. Also, large, long vehicles may have trouble with this winding road.

This byway is open all year.
