Driving the Byway

Colorado Section

  • The Colorado section of the Santa Fe Trail starts at the Kansas border just east of Holly, CO on US-385/50.
  • Head west through Lamar and Las Animas.
  • Continue west through La Junta to where US-50 and US-350 split.
  • Take US-350 southwest through Trinidad.
  • At Trinidad, take I-25 south over Raton Pass.
  • The Colorado section of the Santa Fe Trail ends at the CO/NM border.

New Mexico Section

CO/NM Border to Springer, NM

  • The New Mexico section of the Santa Fe Trail begins on I-25 at the New Mexico state line.
  • Take I-25 south to Raton.
  • In Raton, follow Moulton St. to Second St.
  • Then take Second St. to US-64.
  • Follow US-64 south to Cimarron.
  • In Cimarron get on NM-21 and go to Springer, where the byway branches south and east.

Springer, NM to NM/OK Border

  • Take US 56 east to the junction with NM-453.
  • Take NM-453 north to Grenville.
  • In Grenville turn east onto US-64 and travel to Clayton.
  • In Clayton get onto US-56 for a short journey east to the junction with NM-406.
  • Turn north on NM-406 and follow the road to the NM-OK border.

Springer, NM to Santa Fe, NM

  • Start in Springer and take US-85 to Wagon Mound.
  • Get on NM 120 and go to Watrous.
  • In Watrous, get on NM-161 and follow it through Fort Union and on to Buena Vista.
  • Once in Buena Vista, get on NM-518 and go to Las Vegas-Grand Ave.
  • From there, get on US-85 and go through Romerville, Tecolote, and Bernal.
  • In Bernal, get on NM-3 and go through San Miguel del Vado, San Jose, and Rowe.
  • Get on NM-63 in Rowe and go to Pecos National Park.
  • Take NM-50 to Pecos.
  • In Pecos, get on I-25 and go to Canoncito.
  • From there, take US-85 to Canada de los Alamos.
  • Then go on to County Road 67C.
  • Take 67C to Santa Fe Plaza in Santa Fe where the byway ends.
