Historic National Road - Maryland

The roadways on this byway vary in width and traffic. However, a majority of the byway roads have paved shoulders that are at least eight feet wide (regardless of the average daily traffic (ADT), allowing plenty of room for bikers. Roadways with more narrow shoulders have less traffic (less than 2,000 ADT), making biking a possibility even when the shoulder is more narrow. Some portions of the byway have shoulders that are four feet wide or less (regardless of ADT).
