Mount Baker Highway (Route 542)
Glacier, WA

The community of Glacier is the last town along the highway. It is nestled in a beautiful valley just outside of the Mount Baker Recreation Area. Gold mining, coal mining, and logging started the little town, but by the beginning of the 20th century, outdoor enthusiasts were already coming. The Bellingham Bay and British Columbia Railraod reached the town in 1904 and in 1923 the Mount Baker Highway connected the remote area to other cities. Today, Glacier caters to summer hikers and river-rafters as well as winter skiers and snowboarders. All of the amenities can be found here, except for gas.
