Mount Baker Highway (Route 542)
Mount Baker, WA

Numerous trails for hikers and cross-country skiers criss-cross the mountain. Mount Baker is a favorite for skiers and snow-boarders alike. Mount Baker is a beautiful place to visit for views of icy glaciers glimmering in the sunlight, black stone outcroppings, and deep green stands of trees.

Of all of the Cascade volcanoes in the USA, Mount Baker is the most isolated. It is the most heavily glaciated mountain after Mount Rainier. Because it has so many glaciers, Native Americans gave it a name meaning White Steep Mountain. The volcano is still active, but activity has diminished since 1978. Mudflows are the likely hazard from the volcano. Avalanches of snow and rock have swept down Boulder Glacier at least six times since 1958.
