From Annadel State Park southwest to Sonoma, Route 12- Valley of the Moon Highway takes travelers through fertile vineyards, flourishing wineries, flower-filled meadows, and must-see historic sites.
This 12-mile stretch of road begins in Annadel State Park, which hosts all imaginable outdoor recreation. Popular trails are available for most any use; Lake Ilsanjo offers fine black bass and bluegill fishing; and Ledson Marsh, a bird-watcher's paradise, boasts 130 recorded species of bird. Continuing southwest on Valley of the Moon Highway is Glen Ellen, home of Jack London State Historic Park, which commemorates one of America's most popular writers. The 800-acre site includes London's grave, ruins of Wolf House, and Charmian House of Happy Walls. Docent-led tours are available, along with a splendid book and gift shop. The journey ends at Agua Caliente, but just beyond in the heart of charming old town Sonoma is Sonoma State Historic Park; an interesting compilation of historic buildings borders a city park where one can relax amid a beautiful picnic area.
