Between 1862 and 1877, the 65-mile Bradshaw Trail was used to haul miners and other passengers to the gold fields at La Paz. The trail traverses mostly public land between the Chuckwalla Mountains and the Chocolate Mountain Aerial Gunnery Range. The trail offers spectacular views of the Chuckwalla Bench, Orocopia Mountains, Chuckwalla Mountains and the Palo Verde Valley.
Located in southeastern Riverside County and a small segment in Imperial County, the byway offers a range of activities to delight the outdoor-lover. Hiking opportunities near the byway are particularly good. But the drive itself may be the best part of all. Because the road is still not paved and areas can be rough, four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended - and fun - for travelers on the trail.
