The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway is known for its stunning array of lakes and other bodies of water, but numerous other opportunities for exploration and fun abound along the byway. With the ragged cliffs of the Cascade Mountains or the black, volcanic rock of the Lava Lands, Cascade Lakes offers water sports and much more.
Break in your hiking boots to explore rocky mountain trails or pull out the climbing shoes to tackle the challenging cliffs of the towering Cascade Mountains. The area offers a perfect opportunity to experience a great diversity of volcanic features. Feel the pointed obsidian rocks of volcanic remains through your shoes as you walk along the hardened flow of a once active volcanic area at the Lava Lands Visitors Center. Nowhere else in the country offers all the different aspects of the aftermath of a volcanic eruption, from sheets of ash and pumice to the remains of cinder cones and domes.
Moving from the bare, volcanic rock to the cool forest, enjoy hours of entertainment among the overhanging branches and leaf-strewn paths. Hit the trail for hours of hiking miles in the Deschutes National Forest or explore acres of wilderness areas such as the Three Sisters. This 242,400 acre wilderness area is perfect for backpackers, with several solitary trails and a portion of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. Explore sun dappled trails on horseback or with your bike as you take in the rich scenery of the forest area and listen to the sound of the water.
After snow falls, take your skis along for some of the best downhill skiing in the Northwest. With dry powder snow and a 3,300 foot elevation drop, Mt. Bachelor offers a challenge to both novice and experienced skiers. If you don't care to tackle the swift drop, enjoy perfect conditions for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and even dog sledding. Shake the snow out of your boots and descend to the forest floor to set up camping gear for the night in the forest.
With its placid waters, the Deschutes River is perfect for kayaks and canoes, but if you're looking for more of an adventure, rafting is also a favored activity on the river. Stir up some waves on the lakes while motor boating, sailing or wind surfing. Feeling the cool spray hitting your face is the perfect way to pass the time on a hot summer's day. Finally, cool your feet off in the waters at Pringle Falls and catch a fish or two for a quick bite to eat at the end of the day's activities.
Whether you are more into hiking the hills, exploring the hardened remains of a lava flow, or just like to speed through the lakes with the wind through your hair, the Cascades Lakes Scenic Byway offers a recreational haven for all kinds and all seasons.
