Looping through the heart of central Montana, the Missouri Breaks Back Country Byway takes you past grassy expanses, rugged cliffs, historical sites, and plenty of opportunities for adventure. Sound enticing? Begin your byway exploration by heading east out of Winifred, MT. This southern stretch of byway follows the Nez Perce National Historic Trail, and at the byway’s western curve you’ll encounter the Charles M. Russell Wildlife Refuge. The road within the refuge is not surfaced, so do not attempt to drive it unless conditions are completely dry.
Continuing along to the northern section, the byway runs along the Wild and Scenic Missouri River and traverses the rough terrain that fur traders dubbed the “badlands.” Former campsites of the famous Lewis and Clark also lie along the way.
You can follow in the footsteps of historical figures and admire the varied landscape that makes the Missouri Breaks Back Country Byway a memorable route-- just pack up the essentials and take on 81 miles of Montana’s beautiful badland backcountry.
