Special Considerations
Travelers should take precautions in the summer to avoid problems due to the heat. The winter can be cold with infrequent snow storms that normally do not close the roadways.
Restrictions
There are no special restrictions other than regular roadway maintenance. More travelers are in the area during the summer, but the experience is not compromised. The Kansas City area will have times of heavier traffic slowing travel.
Seasons
- Best Time to Drive
The historic qualities are best experienced from April through October due to winter closings of some sites, with spring and fall being the most scenic.
- High Season
There are more travelers in the summer, but the byway experience is not compromised. The Kansas City area sometimes has times of heavier traffic slowing travel.
- Winter
The road is rarely closed. However, during major snow storms when snow-drifting occurs, the road may close until it is again passable. Some sites along the byway are closed during the winter.
