Geronimo Trail Scenic Byway
Caballo Mountain Vista, NM
The rugged desert Caballo Mountains were known to the Apaches as a place where an abundance of Mescal grew. Mescal, or Century Plant, is a member of the Agave family. It was harvested to be cooked in pits for food, and the liquid distilled into a fermented beverage much favored by the Apaches for its intoxicating effects. The Apaches referred to this location as Mescal Mountain. Mescal was often used in native ceremonies.
