Coronado Trail Scenic Byway
Travel the Two Worlds of Coronado Trail

Escape from the pressures of everyday life and experience the solitude of nature along the Coronado Trail in Arizona. One of Arizona’s best kept secrets, this seldom-traveled byway offers stunning displays of nature in diverse environments all year round. So, pack up the car, leave the world behind, and head out on the Coronado Trail.

On the Coronado Trail, you can drive the few miles from the White Mountains down into the Sonoran Desert and view in a matter of hours a diversity of plant and animal communities that you would normally see over several days driving from Canada to Mexico. Enjoy nature’s splendor from the driver’s seat, or come closer to the beauties of Coronado Trail with a day out in the wilds of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest.

The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, which surrounds the byway, is home to nearly 1,000 miles of hiking trails, 34 lakes and reservoirs, and splendid views of nature. Travel 50 miles south on the byway to the village of Hannagan Meadow where you can hike an easy 3.5 miles through serene fields to beautiful Akre Lake. Up for a little more adventure? Try the Escudilla National Recreation Trail near Alpine, on the byway about 22 miles north of Hannagan Meadow. This 3-mile moderate hike to the top of Arizona’s third-highest peak is so outstanding that it has received congressional recognition. Or, if your ideal nature experience involves a set of wheels, pack up your mountain bike and head out on one of the many trails in the forest that are open to mountain biking.

More than 400 different species of animals call the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest home, so you just might catch a glimpse of antelope, elk, deer, bighorn sheep, or wild turkeys on the trail. Keep an eye to the sky to see various bird species, or cast your fishing line in one of the many lakes and rivers and reel in a lucky catch. Though it happens very rarely, you might even spot a mountain lion, black bear, or the recently re-introduced Mexican Grey Wolf. Keep your eyes peeled!

Haven’t had your fill of hiking? Then head about six miles south of Hannagan Meadow to the stark canyons and ridges of the Blue Range Primitive Area. While the area serves as a preserve, it is open to hiking and horseback riding. Take a hike on one of the most impressive trails-- the Steeple Trail. This strenuous hike is not for the faint of heart! Hike 13 miles of rugged terrain and conifer forests, cacti, and everything in between. This secluded trail is perfect for spotting wildlife. Get your camera ready-- you might spot elk or mule deer quietly grazing in the picturesque meadows.

Come explore some of Mother Nature’s finest on the Coronado Trail in Arizona. From conifer forests to seasonal wildflowers to diverse wildlife, you can experience nature’s wonders to your heart’s content.
