Special Considerations

The cave maintains a constant 40 degrees F year-round. Visitors should bring warm clothing. Also, due to the steep climbs, narrow stairs and occasionally tricky footing, visitors should wear sturdy footwear (no sandals, heels or thongs.) Gloves might be a good idea, too, since the hand rails are metal and quite chilly.

The tour contains 448 stairs one way. Since the tour has no back door, visitors must return the way they came, taking those 448 stairs a second time. The steepest and most continuous staircase, the "Stairway to Heaven", looks intimidating from the bottom (guess what that area is called?), but has several landings where visitors can catch their breath.

Restrictions

Visitors should wear warm clothing and sturdy shoes.

The caves are the habitat of several species of bats, one of which is endangered. Please do not annoy or attempt to get close to any bats you may see.
