Little Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Byway
Visitor Services

All services, including fuel, medical care and auto repair, can be found in Salt Lake City which borders the byway's western edge. In addition, the ski resorts Alta and Snowbird have restaurants, shopping, lodging and more.

Special Considerations

Bicycle and pedestrian travel is allowed, but must share the roadway with vehicles. While pedestrians can frequently be seen using the roadway’s shoulder, there are no pedestrian-specific facilities such as pathways or sidewalks along the roadway.

Restrictions

Although there are no seasonal restrictions, on days with extreme winter weather, UDOT and the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office will restrict access to vehicles with tire chains or four-wheel-drive. Winter avalanche control operations and extreme weather events can close the road for short periods of time.

Best Time to Drive

The natural qualities of the Little Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Byway are best experienced in summer, although fall foliage and winter snowfall also offer terrific views.

High Season

The heaviest traffic volumes are during winter weekends, between 7,000 and 8,000 vehicles per day, often overflowing to other roads.
