Ogden River Scenic Byway begins among the dramatic quartzite cliffs of Ogden Canyon and then meanders through 44 miles of Northern Utah's sensational mountains and countryside. The Wasatch Mountain Range stretches heavenward while the mountains cradle placid Pineview Reservoir and small rural communities in their gentle valleys.
Opportunities for nature discovery and outdoor recreation abound along this stretch of road. Explore Dinosaur Park, for example, and spend some time among Utah's prehistoric tenants. Life-size replicas of these "terrible lizards" dominate this family-friendly museum where you'll learn basic fossil hunting techniques. Meditate among Catholic monks at the Trappist Monastery and sample the creamed honey and jams, year-round. During summer months, take advantage of the canyon's trout fishing, rock climbing, and hiking. Pineview Reservoir is a popular summer recreation site, even for locals, providing some of the best boating in the state.
During the winter visit the three ski resorts in the area, ranging from small and local to world-class establishments with Winter Olympic venues. For a quieter communion with the natural world, try a moonlit snowshoe trip through pristine, silent snowfields.
Whether you come to admire the stands of Douglas fir and spruce, enjoy spectacular mountain views, or speed around the lake on water-skis, the Ogden River Scenic Byway won't disappoint. The drive can be made in a couple of hours, but plenty of high-quality campgrounds make a strong argument for an extended stay.
