Bridges to Buttes Byway
Toadstool Geologic Park, NE
The Toadstool Geologic Park is a unique addition to the byway. Unusual geologic formations and fossil deposits make this an important destination for both travelers and scientists. The longest known mammal trackway of the Oligocene epoch is also located within the park. A walking/hiking trail wanders through many of these geologic features which beg the imagination to decide what they are. Also in the park, there is a sod house that interprets the history of the early homesteaders. The formations were formed due to various erosion rates. Erosion worked on the sediment layers that were deposited by ancient volcanoes. These sediment slabs are often perched at interesting angles.
