Gold Rush Byway
Sidney, NE

Sidney has played an important part in the history of the area. There are many attractions that will be enjoyable for visitors and there are many recreational opportunities. Golfing, walking trails, parks, and swimming are all available in Sidney and let visitors relax before starting (or ending) their journey on the Gold Rush Byway. Sidney has had a colorful past, and it was the site of the railroad stop that dropped men and supplies off for departure to the Black Hills to search for gold. Because of this influx of people, many times the crowd in Sidney was a little bit rowdy. It is reported that at one time there were 23 saloons in one block. The Sioux Army Depot was established in 1942 and was used shortly after WWII began as the site for the storage and handling of military equipment and ammunition. There were many bunkers that dotted the prairie, and today these bunkers are used for storage. The Living Memorial Gardens in Sidney is a memorial dedicated to loved ones by the planting of trees, shrubs, and other plants. Legion Park houses the War Memorial, commemorating veterans from all American wars.
