Special Considerations
This route is a Type I route, a double lane, graded gravel and dirt surface road. The initial portion near Wellington is paved. The road can be driven by passenger cars in good weather. Several normally dry wash crossings in the canyon may be obstacles to travel after heavy rain. Four-wheel drive is recommended for driving side roads. This route should not be driven in vehicles longer than 22 feet.
Be sure to gas up in Wellington or Price, and bring plenty of water. The canyons get hot in the summer. You may be able to reach the canyon stream in places, but there is no public drinkable water available near the rock art region.
Please do not touch the rock art or archaeological sites in any way. Rock art is fragile and once damaged, may not be repairable. Please help preserve these fragile resources in location for future visitors to enjoy.
Restrictions
Recommended 4WD vehicles for side trips and after rains. RVs and vehicles with trailers should not drive this backway at any time.
Seasons
- Best Time to Drive
Spring and fall: you avoid the extreme heat, but watch out for changing weather conditions. Summer is very hot in this region.
- High Season
Spring and fall, as the temperatures are more moderate, but the backway is rarely very busy. The paved part is busiest all year due to mine traffic.
