Birding in Amish Country

Central Ohio may be better known as Amish country, but the pristine region is also home to some great bird-watching areas. While visiting Amish country, make sure to check out some of the bird sanctuaries located along the Amish Country Byway.

Visit the Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area to witness the huge rafts of ducks that migrate through the marsh. Depending on the season, you may also see colorful flocks of Hooded Mergansers and Common Moorhens.

Experience the impressive Shreve Lake Wildlife Area, an open area surrounded by patches of woodland containing oaks, walnut, and willow. Pack a picnic and enjoy the scenery. Afterward, explore the wooded areas and try to spy Orchard Orioles and Northern Terns.

Brown’s Bog remains a popular spot for bird watching. Carefully listen for the distinct tapping of the woodpecker while taking a self-guided tour of the bog, and closely inspect the fields for Marsh Hens and wild turkeys.

See all that the Amish Country Byway and its surrounding region have to offer, but make sure to take time to admire the diverse birds of central Ohio. No matter your birding experience, you will appreciate seeing the superb array of wildlife firsthand.
