Acadia All American Road
Thunder Hole, ME

Thunder Hole is a quiet inlet, carved naturally our of the stony surroundings. Crashing waves travel down the channel, rumbling with dislodged basketball-sized rocks. Pockets of air are trapped at the end, and the air is forced out producing loud claps of sound, as if of distant thunder. The sound is best when the tide is approaching. Visitors may also be able to see a spout of water as high as 40 feet combined with this thunderous roar.

Adjacent to the area is the ranger station, built in the 1920s. This location offers stunning panoramic views of Otter Cliff and Sand Beach.
