Woodward Avenue (M-1) - Automotive Heritage Trail
Detroit River, an American Heritage River, MI

This 32-mile river, was designated an American Heritage River in 1998, and is the connecting channel linking Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie. Approximately 1.5 miles at its widest point, the Detroit River serves as an international border to Canada. The US and Canada are connected across the Detroit River both above and below the waters surface by the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel, respectively. The Detroit River is the source of drinking water for approximately five million people, is a key link for commerce in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system and more goods are transported across this border than any other international border in the US.

The Detroit River also offers countless opportunities for recreation and provides a natural habitat for fish, wildlife and birds. The Thunderfest boat race and the International Freedom Festival fireworks display are two of the noteworthy recreational events that occur on the river.
