Lincoln Highway
Snowmobiling on the Lincoln Highway

Are you suffering from winter’s doldrums? Alleviate your boredom on the snowmobile trails of Lincoln Highway in northern Illinois. An alternative to cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice-skating, snowmobiling offers you an accelerated approach to Illinois winters.

Just a few miles north of the byway, the Great Western Trail in Kane County flourishes in all seasons. You can hike and bike in the warmer months, but once four inches of snow blankets the path, bring out your snowmobiles! Cruise along 17 miles of trail lined with frozen streams. Shelters and restrooms along the way ensure both safety and comfort.

The Franklin Creek Natural Area, a park eight miles east of Dixon and north of the byway, boasts four miles of designated snowmobiling trails through hardwood forests and open meadows. Nestled in pioneer-settled valleys, these trails open when snow falls and hunting season closes.

South of the Lincoln Highway are the rolling hills and elegant woods of many area forest preserves including Glenwood Park and Shabonna Lake State Park. Propel your machine over seven miles of open meadows and forested glens at Shabonna Lake, or opt to snowmobile on 31 acres surrounded by oak trees and hedged by the Fox River. Parking, restrooms, and picnic shelters are available at both parks.

From snowy fields and frosty forests to frozen lakes and iced streams, miles worth of snowmobiling delight await you along Illinois' Lincoln Highway.
