There are no services along the byway. Services are available in Casper, with limited services available in Waltman.

Special Considerations

This Type II road is traversable by a sedan, but less experienced backcountry drivers are encouraged to avoid the upper part of the byway through the mountains. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended to traverse the byway.

This is a very isolated area. Be sure to take adequate food, water and extra clothes. A full tank of gas is recommended for this 100-mile trek through rugged terrain.

Do not travel the road if rain threatens or after heavy storms, some sections of the road can become slick and muddy. Snow in the winter and mud in the spring close the upper section of the byway, and often the rest of the route.

Restrictions

Call the BLM office for conditions before traveling. May-October the byway is usually open.
