Driving the Byway

  • Begin the byway near Smithfield in Johnston County from the US 701/I–95 interchange at exit 90. Immediately turn off the exit and enter US 701; then turn on SR 1009.
  • Follow the course of Hannah's Creek to your right for the next 8.5 miles.
  • About one mile after crossing Hannah's Creek, cross over to Mill Creek.
  • It is 1.4 miles from the community of Bentonville and where the byway and SR 1009 veers left.
  • Travel 1.1 miles to SR 1008. Turn right and follow the road for a distance of 2.9 miles to reach Bentonville Battleground Historic Site.
  • Three miles back on SR 1008, turn on SR 1196. Follow this road for three miles to SR 1205.
  • Turn left and travel north on US 13. Turn right four miles later onto SR 1006.
  • Follow SR 1006 for three miles, and then turn left at the intersection with SR 1120. Follow this road for 7.4 miles before crossing US 117.
  • On SR 1120, go about 2.5 miles east of Dudley, then turn right onto SR 1933 and follow it for about three miles.
  • Cross over SR 1120, and turn left from this route to follow SR 1744 for 3.8 miles to NC 111.
  • Turn left on NC 55, and then 0.4 miles later, turn left again on SR 1739. Follow this route for 4.7 miles.
  • At Strabane, turn right onto SR 1152 and follow it for 3.5 miles. As the road makes a left turn, stay right on SR 1111.
  • At the intersection of SR 1111 and SR 1143, the road turns toward Deep Run. Continue two miles from Deep Run on SR 1141, and then turn right onto SR 1138.
  • A half mile later, turn left on SR 1137. Stop at US 258 one mile later and cross the road diagonally, continuing on SR 1925 for nearly five miles.
  • Turn left at SR 1922. Make a right on NC 58, one-third mile later. The route ends at SR 1165.
