Driving the Byway
From the Washington waterfront, this scenic byway follows the Pamlico River to the Pamlico Sound and to the junction with Croatan Sound.
Driving the Byway
- Begin the byway in the town of Washington, located at the head of the Pamlico River.
- From the intersection of US 17 and Main Street in Washington, begin the byway by following the waterfont east on Main Street to Stewart Parkway.
- Turn right on Stewart Parkway as it curves around waterfront warehouses and becomes Water Street.
- Turn left onto Harvey Street.
- Then turn right back onto Main Street.
- Continue east for 1.4 miles from the the US 17 stoplight to NC 32.
- Follow NC 32 for 5.6 miles to the Broad Creek Bridge and intersection with SR 1331 (Harvey Road).
- Turn right and continue across farm lands for another four miles to the intersection of SR 1331, NC 92, and US 264.
- At the community of Jessema, follow NC 92 for 6 miles to the town of Bath.
- Continure along NC 92 for about five miles to the intersection with NC 306 where it becomes NC 99.
- The road turns north to skirt Jackson Swamp to the northwest and the Pungo River to the east.
- Follow NC 99 for 7 miles to the bridge at Pungo Creek.
- From here it is 3.5 miles to the town of Belhaven.
- At the traffic light in Belhaven, turn right to follow US 264 Business through town.
- Join US 264 and continue east for about 5.5 miles to the Pungo River Bridge.
- Continue for 4.5 miles to the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge.
- Travel along US 264/NC 45 for 4 miles to Scranton.
- Continue to the community of Rose Bay.
- Turn right onto NC 45 after traveling 2.5 miles from Rose Bay.
- Drive through Swan Quarter and leave town on Main Street (SR 1129).
- Get back on US 264 just east of Swan Quarter.
- Travel east on US 264 and watch for elbow curves at Swindle Fork, one mile from SR 1129 and two miles futher.
- Travel around Lake Mattamuskeet. From the intersection of NC 94 and US 264, it is 8.5 miles to Lake Landing.
- Watch for a sharp curve near the community of Amity on US 264, four miles east of Lake Landing at the intersection of US 264 and SR 1311.
- The road turns away from the lake's shore and continues one mile to the village of Englehard.
- From Englehard, travel on US 264. From the Far Creek Bridge, it is 11.5 miles to the Dare and Hyde County line.
- From the county line it is 13 miles to Stumpy Point Bay and the fishing village of Stumpy Point.
- Travel 13 miles from Stumpy Point to the US 64 intersection with US 264.
