Driving the Byway
The Meteor Lakes Scenic Byway travels along NC 242 through the Bladen State Forest and some rural North Carolina Towns. Just north of Wilmington, this area is inland from coastal North Carolina, but features many swampy and wetland areas.
Driving the Byway:
- The byway begins in Elizabethtown from the intersection of NC 242 with NC 53 near US 701.
- Travel on NC 242 past the Cape Fear River through the Bladen Lakes State Forest.
- The first lake visitors will see from the byway is Jones Lake.
- From Jones Lake, pass through the Turnbull Creek Valley. The fields are part of the Big Colly and Cypress Creek Bays. Big White Pocosin can be seen to the left.
- Pass through the town of Roseboro and continue on to Salemburg.
- Continue on NC 242 until you reach the intersection with US 421 where the byway ends.
