Driving the Byway

Driving the Byway:

  • Going north on U.S. 1, exit the bypass right outside Henderson in Vance County.
  • Take Warrenton Road (S.R. 1001)
  • Travel 11 miles on Warrenton Road until it changes into Dr. King Boulevard in Warrenton.
  • At the intersection of Dr. King Boulevard (S.R. 1001) and Main Street (U.S. 401), turn left.
  • Continue for one block, then turn right at the courthouse onto Macon Street (N.C. 58/43).
  • Stay on N.C. 43 when the roads split at the community of Liberia.
  • Follow N.C. 43 for 11 miles until you reach Essex.
  • At Essex, make a sharp left turn onto N.C. 561 East.
  • You will cross I-95 as you continue along N.C. 561
  • Turn left onto U.S. 301 at the community of Beaverdam.
  • Continue for a half mile until you reach the state historic site of Halifax.
  • From Halifax, backtrach south on U.S. 301/N.C. 903/125 for about three miles.
  • Turn left onto N.C. 125/903, and follow the road southeast to the community of Scotland Neck.
  • At Scotland Neck, turn left onto U.S. 258. As you travel southeast, you will cross the Roanoke River.
  • Continue on N.C. 561 past the community of Rich Square.
  • At St. John, there is an intersection and a large white church. At the intersection, turn left onto Menola St. John Road (S.R. 1141)
  • 1.5 miles later, turn right onto Flea Hill Road (S.R. 1142).
  • Travel for 2.8 miles and then turn right onto Woodland Road (S.R. 1160).
  • Continue to the north on Woodland Road (S.R. 1160)for four miles until you reach the town of Murfreesboro.
  • Turn right on Murfreesboro's Main Street and follow it to the U.S. 258/N.C. 11 stoplight.
  • Follow U.S. 258 North across the Meherrin River for 2.7 miles to Barrets Crossroads.
  • Turn left onto Statesville Road (S.R. 1310).
  • Four miles later, turn right onto Foushee Raily Road (S.R. 1315).
  • Turn Right again two miles later onto Buckhorn Church Road (S.R. 1316) at Britts Store community.
  • Follow Buckhorn Church Road (S.R. 1316) for two miles into the community of Como.
  • Turn right and travel south along U.S. 258 for a short stretch.
  • Turn left onto Parker Ferry Road (S.R. 1306) and travel one mile south to the Parkers Island Cable Ferry.
  • Take the Parker Island Cable Ferry across the Meherrin River and continue on Parkers Fishery Road (S.R. 1175) for another 1.5 miles.
  • At the intersection with U.S. 158. turn left.
  • Continue for one mile and then turn left again onto U.S. 13/158.
  • Turn right three miles later onto N.C. 137. Travel East to Gatesville.
  • From Gatesville, follow N.C. 37 South for three miles.
  • Turn left onto Mill Pond Road (S.R. 1400).
  • After passing Merchant's Millpong State Park, turn right on Pond Road (S.R. 1403) to Eason's Crossroads.
  • Turn right onto U.S. 158 along the Lassiter Swamp.

  • Travel for 16 miles until you reach Lynch's Corner and the end of the byway.
