Driving the Byway
The byway is 18 miles long and travels through lower piedmont area of North Carolina. It will take drivers at least 35 minutes to drive the byway, but most travelers will want to take time for a few stops.
To Drive the Byway:
- Begin the byway in the town of Ellerbe.
- Travel east on Millstone Road (SR 1452)
- In Ellerbe turn right onto Church Street (US 220) to continue on the byway where you will pass the Ranking Museum of American Heritage.
- Continue for 1.2 miles and take a left onto NC 73. An NCDOT rest and picnic area can be found to the right. Or continue on US 220 for a half mile to reach Ellerbe Springs resort.
- The byway continues on NC 73 for 11.4 miles.
- Turn right onto Indian Mound Road (SR 1160) and cross into Montgomery County where the route is renamed as SR 1542.
- Continue for 1.5 miles to the Town Creek Indian Mound.
- The byway ends where Indian Mound Road intersects with NC 731.
