Driving the Byway
The Grassy Islands Crossing Byway takes visitors along the Pee Dee River down to the northern end of Blewett Falls Lake. Travelers will see wetlands, swamps, hardwood forests, rivers, farms, and the byway's namesake-- the grassy islands.
Driving the Byway
- From US 52, the byway begins on Pinkston River Road (SR 1627) at Cedar Hill.
- At the 4.8-mile mark, take a left onto Grassy Island Crossing Road (SR 1634).
- Continue along Grassy Island Road for 4.6 miles.
- Turn left onto NC 109.
- Travel NC 109 for 2.5 miles.
- Turn right onto SR 1148 which is also a Grassy Island Road.
- Follow SR 1148 for 13 miles past Blewett Falls Lake and the Grassy Islands.
- The byway ends north of Rockingham at the intersection with Holly Grove Church Road (SR 1146).
