Driving the Byway
Begin in Ellsworth and take Route 1 east for 4.5 miles. Turn left on Route 182 to Franklin. Scenic vistas over Hog Bay begin in 1.5 miles. From the northeast, follow Route 1 south from Machias for 28 miles to the historic center of Cherryfield.
The Blackwoods Byway begins in Franklin at the Township 9 town line. It extends for 12.5 miles, coming to an end at mile 12.5, when you cross the Calais Branch Railroad tracks, 0.8 miles west of the junction of State Route 182 and U.S. Route 1.
