Cherohala Skyway - North Carolina
Overlooks and Scenic Stops, NC
All along the byway, travelers enraptured by the cloud covered mountaintops of the Cherohala Skyway will want to stop and enjoy the scenery from an angle off of the road. The following places are designated for stopping on the byway. They appear in order from the east end of the byway to the Tennesee State line.
At 3,100 feet, this is an open area with a view to the Santeetlah
Creek drainage that offers a marvelous photo opportunity. There are
four picnic tables for an afternoon lunch.
This pullover offers a lone picnic table for a quiet picnic. At
3,550 feet, a small wooden platform overlooks the valley below
At 3,740 feet, this stop offers a crisp view of a mountain vista as
the Santeeetlah Creek rushes below.
Wright Cove is an overlook at 4,150 feet.
To view this overlook, take a peaceful walk through the hardwood
forest to a vista well worth the walk. In about 3/10 of a mile,
this vista overlooks the byway and the mountaintops that go on
forever. Before you go, stop and picnic at one of the two tables
found here. The trail is accessible to the physically
challenged.
Further down the byway, travelers will find Huckleberry, a 5,300
feet overlook.
This overlook is over a mile high at 5,390 feet. Three picnic
tables allow you to enjoy lunch at the highest overlook on the
byway.
This overlook offers a great photo opportunity at 5,240 feet.
Take a look at Haw Knob Slopes at 4,890 feet.
At 4,570 feet, this overlook includes picnic tables.
This stop provides information on the Skyway at informational
boards as well as restroom facilities. Stratton Ridge overlooks the
Cherohala from 4,420 feet. Five picnic tables are available for a
lunch.
At this last overlook before the Tennessee state line, get out and
take a picture or two. This overlook stands at 4,470 feet.
