Rich Mountain Battlefield Civil War Site, WV

The Rich Mountain Battlefield site sits atop Rich Mountain, while the fortified Camp Garnett lies near the base of the west slope of the mountain. On July 11, 1861, Federal troops under Gen. McClellan flanked around the Confederate Camp Garnett to attack a guardpost at the pass over the mountain, thus securing the turnpike for the Union. Sites have parking areas and interpreted trails. Restrooms (in season) and pavilion are at Field of Fire, west of Camp Garnett.
