Midland Trail
Golf on the Midland Trail

The Midland Trail gives visitors a chance to witness pristine nature and opportunities to look into America's past, but don’t forget that the Midland Trail has other ways to take in nature and learn about history. Experience the historic and beautiful golf courses along the trail to fully take in the Midland Trail experience.

Established in 1884, Oakhurst Links, located in White Sulphur Springs just a few miles from the byway, was the first golf course created in the United States. Find out for yourself how beautiful the mountainous golf course is. Gaze from atop the ridge that surrounds the colorful countryside, and aim your shots from holes that overlook the valley floor. Step back in time and use replica 1800s hickory clubs and gutta percha balls, precursors to the modern-day, rubber-core golf ball. Although there are over 20 golf courses within a short drive from the byway, Oakhurst Links is the only course in the country that can stake the claim of being the first golf club and tournament host.

Don’t worry if you don’t have antique golf clubs because the course provides special replica equipment made in St. Andrews, Scotland exclusively for Oakhurst Links, and the clubs are included in your green fee. Adding to the authenticity of your 19th Century experience is the flock of sheep which roam the course, which help keep the fairways "mowed."

For an unparalleled historical golfing experience, Oakhurst Links, located a few miles from the Midland Trail, presents golfers with challenging golf in a breathtaking setting.
