The town of Malden, located off the expressway on the old road, was once known as Kanawha Salines. It was once the center of the great Kanawha Valley salt industry of the 19th Century. Visitors can still see a number of homes from that period. Malden also includes a reconstruction of Booker T. Washington's boyhood cabin, the Craik-Patton house, and the Ruffner Log Cabin.
