Route 151--Shasta Dam Boulevard curves along the slope of a ridge, providing views of the Sacramento River, Shasta Lake, and distant hills. The "Three Shastas" include the gigantic Shasta Dam, the vivid blue waters of Shasta and, in the distance, the snow-capped peak of Mt. Shasta.
Scenic Route 151 provides access to Shasta Lake, which attracts many visitors to its striking landscape. Recreation opportunities at both private and public facilities are abundant. From modern marinas and campgrounds to primitive tent sites and four-wheel exploration, you are invited to discover California's largest reservoir.
One of the lake's most popular attractions is excellent year-round fishing, whether from a boat or from shore. The lake is home to 16 varieties of fish, including sturgeon. Trout species include rainbow, German brown, kamaloops, and kokanee salmon. Bass species include largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. Catfish species include channel cats, white cats, and brown bullheads. Smaller species include crappie and bluegill.
A good way to acquaint oneself with the area is by stopping at the US Forest Service visitor center in the small town of Mountain Gate located 8 miles north of Redding off Interstate 5. After visiting for just a couple days, you will come to understand why Route 151--Shasta Dam Boulevard is known for its great access to a wide spectrum of recreational attractions and scenic views.
