Like to snowmobile? Travel along Colorado's Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway during the winter and find miles of groomed snowmobile trails to sink your sled into. Snow blankets the mesa in the winter, offering many play areas where you can catch amazing views of one of the largest flat topped mountains in the world. Although this mesa will take your breath away in the summer season, views of the snow-covered mountain in the winter time will also awe and amaze you. Other amazing views to catch include Dry Mesa Dinosaur Quarry, Bridal Veil Falls and over 300 lakes. The mesa is covered with these lakes, and in the wintertime their icy, tree-surrounded expanses are a beauty to behold. You won't want to miss anything, so make sure you travel the byway with your snowmobile for an exceptional winter trip.
As you travel the byway stop first at the Powderhorn Ski Area to ride the brightest snowmobiling jewel in the area: the Sunlight to Powderhorn Trail System. This trail is 120 miles in length and contains a trail system with over 180 miles of groomed and ungroomed snowmobiling trails. The trail goes through the Grand Mesa National Forest so be sure to bring your camera and sunglasses. Experience the forest firsthand as you whip through the snow-covered trees on your sled.
Another way to see the Grand Mesa and Colorado's longest multi-use winter recreational trail is to take a snowmobiling tour. Sunlight Mountain Ski Resort not far from the eastern end of the byway offers several guided tours. Their Tri-County Point Tour is about sixteen miles long and includes incredible views of Pitkin, Mesa and Garfield Counties to be seen from Tri-County Point. Take another of the resort's guided tours, the Baylor Park Adventure Ride along the Sunlight to Powderhorn Trail, and afterwards play in Baylor Park. Baylor Park is a huge meadow so everyone will have a chance to get covered in snow!
Whether you ride your sled to places undiscovered, play in the snow or take a guided tour, snowmobiling adventures along the Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway are beckoning to you. Don't miss out on this opportunity to experience the solitude of this vast area in western Colorado. As you sled the Sunlight to Powderhorn Trail System, you will discover that the wintertime is the perfect time to unearth the beauties of this amazing, elevated byway.
