Deep Powder Sledding on Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway

Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway - (California, Oregon)

With thousands of miles of trails among aspen groves, conifer forests, and crystal-clear blue lakes, Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway delivers snowmobile enthusiasts to some of the finest terrain in the nation. From Diamond Lake just north of Crater Lake National Park to Lassen National Forest, you'll find sno-parks, short jaunts, or 60-mile epics beginning just off the byway. Bring your own sled or rent one in a byway community and hit the area's hundreds of miles of groomed trails and play areas.

On the northern end of the byway you'll find Klamath County in Southern Oregon, the home to the largest number of registered snowmobile riders in the state. Slightly west in Douglas County, the Diamond Lake area features over 300 miles of groomed trails, including guided tours, rentals and sno-parks. Stock up on gear and gas in the town of Chemult, gun the engine and head to Diamond Lake for a great lunch, then return to town for a well-earned rest.

The Klamath and Winema National Forests provide their own network of trails and journeys. Hook up with one of the local snowmobile clubs for an area expert's guidance and explore the Tri-forest Snowmobile Trail. The trail system includes four snowmobile parks, covering the Klamath, Modoc, and Shasta-Trinity forests in Northern California. Access the trail system at one of several snowmobile parks and enjoy amenities such as warming huts, restrooms, and well-groomed trails.

Lassen National Forest, on the southern loop of Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, features almost 500 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, the largest snowmobile trail system in California. Visitors can access this system from seven different snowmobile parks or staging areas across the forest. Six of these staging areas lie on or near the byway. Take the Fredonyer Long Loop all the way to the Diamond Mountain, where you'll play on the ridgetops surrounding Gilman Basin. Take in magnificent views of Nevada to the east, the Cascade Range to the north, and the Sierra Nevadas to the south and west.

Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway offers a world-class experience in some of the nation's greatest backcountry regions. Whether your perfect snowmobile trip involves hopping from town to town and enjoying wintry mountain communities or extensive trips through remote backcountry, you'll find it here.
