On the Mohawk Towpath Byway, you’ll find more than just a great place to ride your bike--you'll also discover the charm, history, and culture of upstate New York. Ride one of the byway’s many bike routes at your own pace or participate in annual biking events for an unforgettable experience on or near this riverside byway.
Begin your biking experience with a ride directly on the byway. Take an afternoon to bike all or part of the 27.7 miles between Waterford and Schenectady, NY and see attractions ranging from the Harmony Mills Historic District to the Vischer Ferry Nature and Historic Preserve along your way.
Another popular bike route is the Mohawk-Hudson Trail. This 35-mile walking and biking trail along the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers between Rotterdam and Cohoes runs primarily along an abandoned rail right-of-way on the south side of the Mohawk River. While pedaling this paved trail, see tranquil river views with evidence of culture and technology—dams, locks, bridges, churches, mansions, theaters, and historic sites, as well as the natural world—waterfowl, wildlife, wetlands, overhanging trees, and lush summertime vegetation. If you’re feeling ambitious, bike both the Mohawk-Hudson and the Mohawk Towpath Byway for a 50-mile circular journey covering both sides of the river.
For a scenic ride, try what the locals call the “Rexford Ramble,” a 15.4-mile route, which overlaps with the Mohawk Towpath Trail northwestern section. Start at the Vischer Ferry historic hamlet and bike to Rexford. Along the way take time to visit the overlook to Erie Canal’s Lock 7, the Riverview orchards, and the Schenectady Yacht Club headquarters, giving you a glimpse into the region’s industrial roots.
At the byway’s eastern end near Cohoes and Waterford, take the History Mystery Bike Tour, as it was dubbed in a local guidebook, to learn about the area’s industrial heritage. You’ll begin and end at Peebles Island State Park and pass many river transportation locks on the Erie and Champlain Canals, including the Flight of Locks, the highest flight of lift locks in the world.
Although the trails themselves are fun and engaging, don’t miss the added thrill of competition. Visit Halfmoon and Clifton Park in October for the annual Mohawk Towpath Duathlon. See how you rank against fellow athletes who dare the 20-mile running and biking race that covers rural roads both on and off the byway.
With trails and events to perhaps unexpected lessons in local history, culture, and industry, you'll be sure to add the Mohawk Towpath Byway to your list of road-biking destinations.
